What is Pewter?
What is Pewter?
Pewter possesses a unique combination of qualities. It retains its sheen, is hardwearing and is incredibly flexible to work with, making it the ideal material for developing and crafting new designs. It’s therefore no surprise that pewter has been in continuous use since the Bronze Age and is one of the world’s oldest manufacturing industries.
Originally made of pure tin with the addition of some lead, today’s pewter is completely free of lead. In addition to containing pure tin, small amounts of antimony (to add to lustre) and copper (for strength) are also used.
What do the stamped touchmarks mean?
What do the stamped touchmarks mean?
The A.R. Wentworth touchmarks appear on every flask (with the exception of the hammered flasks due to their design) and are your guarantee of authenticity, quality and craftsmanship.
They consist of four or five symbols with the following meaning:
- ARW – the initials of our founder, Arthur Richard Wentworth, who founded the company in 1949.
- 92 – the minimum percentage of tin, the fourth most precious metal.
- EPU – our European Pewter Union membership. (Round flask only)
- ABPC – the Association of British Pewter Craftsmen mark.
- The two sheaves of arrows are part of the City of Sheffield’s coat of arms.
Please note the round flask is the only flask with the EPU touch mark.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Cleaning & Maintenance
- Thoroughly wash inside using a solution of clean, warm water and several drops of liquid dish detergent and then rinse thoroughly with clean water before first use.
- Before first use, fill the flask with plain water, screw the top down hard and shake vigorously to ensure the flask is water tight, before filling with spirit. All our
flasks are water tested before despatch, but occasionally, damage has been known to occur in transit. - Always keep your flask clean on the outside, and when you have used one filling of spirit, clean the inside of the flask as mentioned in (1), for hygienic reasons.
- Spirit can be retained in the flask as long as you require and the quality will be maintained as if it had been in a glass bottle.
- Pewter spirit flasks are not suitable for use with soda water or carbonated drinks.
- Not suitable for use in a dishwasher.
- Pewterware has a low melting point and should not be used in conjunction with any type of stove or heat source, otherwise serious damage will occur.
